Background of the study

Social media platforms have transformed the ways in which language is articulated, with TikTok emerging as a prominent medium for phonetic experimentation. In Nigeria, TikTok lip sync videos have garnered significant attention as users creatively mimic and modify audio content, leading to observable changes in phonetic articulation. These videos often involve exaggerated enunciation, altered intonation patterns, and innovative pronunciation techniques that reflect both cultural influences and the demands of digital performance (Akinyemi, 2023). Comparative analysis of these videos reveals that digital media not only reproduces traditional phonetic features but also generates new articulatory patterns that challenge conventional norms. This study examines the impact of TikTok lip sync videos on Nigerian phonetic articulation by comparing them with standard spoken language. The research investigates how digital performance affects speech clarity, accent modification, and overall pronunciation, contributing to the evolving phonetic landscape of Nigerian digital communication (Obi, 2024). The study ultimately provides insights into the role of social media in shaping contemporary phonetic practices and informs future theoretical and pedagogical approaches in phonetics.

Statement of the problem

Despite the popularity of TikTok lip sync videos, there is limited research on how these digital performances influence phonetic articulation in Nigeria. Most existing studies focus on visual trends rather than the auditory nuances of digital content. This gap limits our understanding of the specific phonetic modifications that occur when users engage in lip syncing, including changes in pronunciation, intonation, and accent. The lack of comparative analysis between digital and traditional spoken language further hampers efforts to develop comprehensive phonetic models suited to the digital age (Emeka, 2023). This study seeks to address these shortcomings by offering a detailed investigation of phonetic variation in TikTok lip sync videos.

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze phonetic articulation in TikTok lip sync videos by Nigerian users.

2. To compare these articulatory patterns with standard spoken language.

3. To propose models for understanding digital phonetic innovation.

Research questions

1. How do TikTok lip sync videos alter phonetic articulation among Nigerian users?

2. What specific phonetic changes are observed in these videos?

3. How do these changes compare to traditional pronunciation patterns?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it examines the impact of TikTok lip sync videos on Nigerian phonetic articulation, providing insights into digital sound innovation. The research contributes to sociophonetics by identifying new patterns in pronunciation and informing language teaching strategies that account for digital influences (Chinwe, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing TikTok lip sync videos by Nigerian users, excluding other social media platforms and offline phonetic practices.

Definitions of terms

• Phonetic Articulation: The production and modulation of speech sounds.

• Lip Sync Videos: Digital videos in which users mimic pre recorded audio.

• Digital Phonetics: The study of phonetic patterns in digital communication.
